Many people are introducing protein powders into their diets for various reasons. But when you think of protein powders, egg white protein powder is usually not the first type of protein powder most people think of.

In the past, bodybuilders were primarily the consumers of protein powders. They also were the ones adding eggs or egg whites to their protein shakes. That is no longer the case. As protein powders became more mainstream, and as more and more “average” people began looking for ways to add healthy, low-fat protein to their diets, a larger variety of protein powders have become available. Egg white protein powder is one of them, and it is gaining popularity.

One scoop of egg white protein powder can provide 4 times the amount of protein found in one whole egg and 6 times the amount of protein in one egg white.

Who Should Use Egg White Protein Powder?

If you are looking for a convenient low fat and low-calorie protein source, egg white protein powder may be a good option. It can be added to milk, milk alternatives, green drinks, yogurt and more. It generally has a milder taste than other types of protein powders, such as whey or soy.

Because egg white protein is non-dairy, it can be used by individuals with lactose intolerance. Most egg white protein powders contain little carbohydrates, so they are a good option for dieters or those on a low carb or paleo diet too.

However, not all egg white protein powders are the same. Some low-quality products, especially those manufactured outside the U.S., may contain traces of antibiotics and hormones and also may put you at risk of being exposed Salmonella. Therefore, it is important to look for quality products produced in the USA. Still, some egg white protein powders contain added flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, and other additives.

The regular/plain variety is pure egg whites–nothing else.  It does not contain lecithin, as others do and has no added flavors. It gets frothier than other egg white protein powders and does not dissolve as easily.

The vanilla creme and rich chocolate flavors have added ingredients–making them dissolve better.

Vanilla creme ingredients: Egg White Powder (Instantized), Xylitol, Natural Vanilla Flavors, Better Stevia® [Organic Stevia Extract (Leaf)], Natural Citrus Flavor and Soy Lecithin (< 1%).

The serving size is much smaller than most egg white protein powders, making the protein lower. However, the label lists 1 gram of sugar. There is no sugar added to the plain egg white powder. It contains only egg whites, so I don’t know where this is coming from. The other brands do not list any sugar.

  1. This is really great information! I am impressed with the difference in quality and uses. I am happy to hear egg white protein powder is available as a supplement. Having an alternative to soy is so refreshing. Thank you for sharing your research!

    1. Hi Kathleen
If you are interested in different types of protein powders, I am writing a new article on protein powders– Best Protein Powder For Women. It should be published in the next few days.

  2. Hi Sandra, I’m with Rox on this one! I too like to hit the weights but have never heard of egg white protein. Those grams of protein per serving are amazing. 24g of protein per 33g serving… unbelievable!! How do the prices compare with standard whey protein?

    1. Great question, Anthony
Whey protein powder has been around so much longer than egg white protein powder, so there are not as may brands or varieties of egg white protein powder. Protein powders, in general, vary greatly in price. Currently, egg white protein powders are often less expensive.

  3. Interesting post! It is great to see that the manufacturers of protein powders are staying innovative.

I think the Paleo powder would be best for me, but I have an intolerance to egg white as well as an intolerance to casein, so I can only use these powders once a week or so. And those flavors…blueberry tart? That sounds pretty yummy!

Is there anything about the manufacturing of these powders that could be worrisome? It is a cooked protein correct?

    1. Hi Irma,
That’s too bad you have an egg white intolerance. To answer your question, it is always best to purchase from reputable companies.
Egg white protein is not cooked; however, egg white powder does undergo a pasteurisation process, which is designed to kill pathogens.

  4. From looking at the egg white protein powders you recommended, it looks like the Paleo Thin is the most organic option available. I worry about my health a lot, so I am very careful what I put in my body.

I do have a question though. What have other customers been saying about the product? Did they enjoy it? Did it live up to their expectations? I am on the fence about it for now, but I could be tempted by others good experiences.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you make it a great day!

    1. Hi Alex,
To be quite honest, most people prefer the non organic plain and the flavored varieties of Paleo Thin egg white protein powder. Some people claim it tastes different from the regular plain. They all mix well and don’t have the powderyness of other protein powders. Actually, even though the other varieties of Paleo Thin are not organic, they are non-Gmo and the chickens are not treated with antibiotics or hormones. Let me know what you think when you try one.

  5. Highly informative and good product recommendations. Good for highly active people looking for convenient protein sources with a high bio availability.

    1. Hi Daniel
Thanks for leaving your comment about the best egg white protein powder.

  6. I have been looking for a protein powder to add to my workout routine, and I have never heard of egg white protein powders before. How would you recommend I go about choosing the type of protein powder to use?

    1. Thanks for your question, Rox. Well, to choose the best egg white protein powder for you, you may want to consider first if you want it flavored or unflavored. Personally, I often mix a bit of a flavor and plain together so I can adjust the intensity of flavor. I put frozen fruit, soy milk and sometimes veggies in mine so it depends on what flavor combination I am making at the time. If you are going to add fruit or veggies or flavored yogurt, you may want to get plain. If you are going to just add milk or water, I would get a flavored one. If the flavor is too intense or sweet for you, you can either add less of the protein powder or mix it with plain. Hope this helps.
